Obsidian: owning the files means choosing how to look after them
Begin with the folder, not the graph
Obsidian's official Android description identifies its foundation as a local folder of plain-text Markdown files. It also lists a graph view, community plugins, themes and mobile controls. The file model is the most useful starting point for evaluating it. If you want notes that have an identifiable location and a readable text format, that foundation is more consequential than the appearance of a connected graph.
A small evaluation vault should contain actual notes rather than a beautifully organized empty hierarchy. Write a meeting note, a short explanation of something you learned and a project question. Link two notes because the connection helps you understand them. If you cannot explain why a link is useful, adding it merely to make the graph denser is unlikely to improve retrieval.
Portability needs a practical check
Plain text makes the core content easier to inspect outside the app, but a working collection may also include attachments, links and conventions. Open a sample note in another suitable text editor and examine what remains understandable. Then locate an attachment and check how its relationship to the note is represented. This is a suggested portability exercise; Appuza has not performed it on your files or devices.
An exit plan does not imply that you expect to leave. It clarifies which parts of the collection are essential and which depend on a chosen workflow. If a plugin changes the way information is displayed, keep track of whether the underlying content still makes sense without that plugin. A collection is more maintainable when you can explain its important dependencies.
Synchronization and backup are separate questions
Having a local folder tells you where a copy exists. It does not establish that there is an independent recoverable copy after a mistaken edit or device loss. Read the current official guidance for synchronization and backup before relying on a multi-device setup. Check what is included in the service or method you choose rather than assuming the Android app's presence solves every storage requirement.
For a trial, create a disposable note and observe how a controlled edit appears on the other intended device. Do not use an important document to experiment with conflicting edits or deletion. The goal is to understand the behavior with expendable material, then establish a process for the notes that matter. If another person will collaborate, consider whether the arrangement supports that responsibility clearly.
Plugins are useful after the need is visible
The listing includes community plugins, which can extend a workflow but also introduce more components to maintain. Start with the smallest setup that helps you write and retrieve notes. Add a plugin in response to a recurring problem, and review its source, permissions and maintenance information through the official ecosystem. A long feature tour can encourage configuration before you have enough real notes to know what is missing.
Notion is worth examining when a shared workspace with connected project information is the priority. Google Keep is a different option for short, immediate capture. Obsidian makes particular sense when the relationship between your notes and their local files is an advantage you intend to use. It can demand more explicit decisions than a simple list app; that is a trade-off to assess, rather than proof that either approach is more serious.
Name notes for the next retrieval
A note title should help you find the idea when you no longer remember the circumstances in which you wrote it. Replace vague names such as miscellaneous or new note with a short description of the question or topic. If the note records a decision, include the reason and the remaining uncertainty in its text. Linking becomes more useful when the linked note has a clear purpose. This is a writing practice rather than an Obsidian-specific feature, but it can determine whether a local knowledge base becomes a useful reference or an increasingly elaborate collection of forgotten fragments.
The decision
Choose it for a deliberate personal knowledge collection with a file and backup plan. Use a lighter capture tool if maintaining a vault would become the task.
Other approaches to consider
Notion: Notes, Tasks, AI, Google Keep - Notes and Lists. Compare the task each app serves, rather than treating them as interchangeable.
